Most of us don’t give much thought to earwax until it becomes a problem. While often overlooked, earwax or cerumen plays a key role in protecting ear health.

Produced by glands in the ear canal, earwax acts as a protective barrier, trapping dust, dirt, and bacteria while preventing them from reaching the delicate inner ear. Under normal conditions, earwax moves outward naturally, clearing away debris as it goes. But when this process is disrupted, the result can be a blocked ear, and that’s when your hearing can begin to suffer.

A blocked ear due to excessive wax isn’t just a mild inconvenience.

It can significantly reduce your ability to hear clearly, affecting everything from casual conversations to your work performance and entertainment experience. A buildup of earwax may make sounds seem unclear, often leading you to ask others to repeat themselves.

Simple joys like listening to music, watching television, or talking on the phone can turn into frustrating struggles. Over time, this can lead to fatigue, embarrassment, and even social withdrawal all because of something as seemingly minor as earwax buildup.

There are several reasons why earwax may accumulate and become impacted.

In some cases, the ear’s glands may produce more wax than normal, increasing the risk of blockages. The frequent use of earbuds, earphones, or hearing protection can also contribute to the problem, as these devices tend to push wax deeper into the ear canal instead of allowing it to exit naturally. Many people unknowingly worsen the situation by using cotton swabs in an attempt to clean their ears. While this may seem helpful, swabs often push the wax further in, making it more compact and difficult to remove.

Other factors that may increase the risk of wax buildup include narrow or curved ear canals, which can trap wax and prevent it from coming out on its own. As we age, earwax often becomes drier and harder, making it more difficult for the ear to clean itself naturally.  People with certain skin conditions like eczema, may also produce wax with a different consistency, which contributes to blockages.

Blocked earwax causing tinnitus—ringing or buzzing in ears | Aanvii Hearing

The signs of a blocked ear can vary, but there are a few common symptoms to watch for.

A sudden decrease in hearing is one of the most noticeable indicators. You might feel like you’re listening through a wall or have cotton in your ears. Some people also experience earache, a sensation of fullness in the ear, or even dizziness due to the impact on the body’s balance system. In some cases, blocked wax can lead to tinnitus a ringing or buzzing sound that’s not caused by an external source.

When hearing becomes compromised, even basic activities become more challenging.

Holding a conversation at work, participating in meetings, or even understanding instructions can become difficult. In personal settings, you may find yourself turning up the volume on the TV or radio, which not only affects your listening comfort but may also be damaging your hearing in the long run. The constant struggle to hear clearly can leave you mentally exhausted and less confident in social or professional interactions.

Thankfully, earwax-related hearing issues are manageable with the right approach.

At Aanvii Hearing, we emphasize the importance of professional ear care. While it might be tempting to try home remedies or use over-the-counter ear drops, self-treatment often carries risks—especially if the eardrum is perforated or if the wax is deeply compacted. That’s why we recommend visiting a qualified audiologist or ENT specialist for any symptoms related to ear blockage. Using advanced tools and techniques, professionals can safely remove the buildup without harming the ear canal or eardrum.

Preventive care is equally important.

Routine ear check-ups allow experts to detect early signs of wax buildup before it affects your hearing. If you use hearing aids, earbuds, or work in noisy environments, regular monitoring is especially crucial. Using objects like cotton swabs can push wax deeper and cause harm. It's best to gently clean only the outer ear with a soft cloth.
