Hearing aids are benefiting people all over the globe every day. Still, there are many myths and misconceptions spread about hearing aids which prevent people from seeking the help they need. Due to these false beliefs, there is a delay in getting hearing loss treated — which can lead to worsening of hearing loss over time.

To help you clear your doubts, here are the most common myths about hearing aids and the truth about them.

Myth 1: Hearing aids are only for old people

The truth: Anyone can have hearing loss irrespective of their age. It can affect infants (congenital), children, young adults, and seniors. In some countries, nearly 1 in 5 teenagers suffers from some degree of hearing loss.

Modern hearing aids are designed for all ages. They come in different colors, styles, and advanced features like Bluetooth streaming and connectivity to electronic devices, which appeal to younger users.

Myth 2: My hearing loss is not that bad enough yet

The truth: Most people tend to ignore the early signs of hearing loss and go on with their life thinking, "My hearing loss is not bad enough for me to invest in hearing devices." This is where people go wrong. Even mild hearing loss can affect your ability to understand conversation. You may not be able to follow what people are saying, especially in a noisy environment. This confusion leads to isolation and reduced social life — as you try to avoid the embarrassment of asking the speaker to repeat themselves again and again, or being ignored.

More importantly, untreated hearing loss, especially in seniors, can lead to cognitive decline and an increased risk of dementia. Therefore, it is better to address hearing loss sooner, as waiting will only make the adjustment harder.

Myth 3: Hearing aids will make everything painfully loud

The truth: To be honest, this myth was true for old hearing aids, which were just amplifiers — they made everything loud, including background noise. But modern hearing aids are completely different. They function based on advanced processing of sound, thanks to their sophisticated processors.

Modern hearing machines do not amplify everything. The processor in them analyzes sound thousands of times per second and identifies speech and noise using algorithms. The output delivers exactly what your ear needs — clear speech with reduced noise.

Myth 4: Hearing aids are big, ugly, and noticeable

The truth: We have all grown up seeing the old, bulky hearing aids sitting behind the ears used by our elders, or in movies and shows. That is where this myth comes from. These were the visuals from a decade ago. Today's hearing aids are sleek, discreet, and available in multiple colors to match your skin tone, hair, or personal aesthetics.

Brands like Signia offer hearing aids that sit inside your ear canal and are virtually invisible to others. The older bulky receiver-in-canal hearing aids have been redesigned into slim RICs. No one will notice them until you point them out.

Myth 5: I can just buy a cheap amplifier online

The truth: Personal Sound Amplification Products (PSAPs) available on e-commerce sites are not hearing aids. They are just amplifiers which are not customized according to your requirements. Using these types of products can damage your hearing further by exposing your ears to unsafe loudness levels.

You should always get your hearing checked by an expert audiologist before purchasing a hearing aid. An audiologist can guide you about the device your ear needs. A proper hearing aid is programmed by the expert based on your test results and is required to be fine-tuned according to your experience. Therefore, one should avoid buying cheap amplifiers and instead get a customized and programmed hearing aid based on your medical requirement.

Myth 6: Hearing aids will restore my hearing to normal

The truth: Hearing aids cannot restore your normal hearing completely. Although they are tools that will improve your ability to hear, understand, and reduce rapid decline in hearing, they are not a cure.

What you can expect:
  • Significant reduction in listening effort
  • Ability to understand conversations in quiet and moderate noise
  • Enjoying family dinners, TV, and phone calls

What is unrealistic to expect:

  • Hearing perfectly in every possible situation
  • Zero effort ever needed
  • Hearing exactly like you did at 20 years old
The goal is not perfection. The goal is effortless enough that you stop struggling and start living.

Myth 7: I only need one hearing aid

The truth: Your brain is designed to process sound coming from both ears together to locate where the sound is coming from, get an idea of your surroundings, and understand speech in noise. Unless you have completely normal hearing in one ear and profound hearing loss in the other, you will need two hearing aids. Using only one can confuse your brain and senses.
Using only one hearing aid provides incomplete information to your brain. This can make it hard for you to follow conversations in noisy places. It can also hinder your ability to locate where sounds are coming from — for example, you may not be able to tell whether an approaching vehicle is on your left or right, which can be dangerous when crossing the street or walking in traffic.

Myth 8: Hearing aids are too expensive

The truth: While premium hearing aids are an investment, the cost has decreased significantly in recent years. There are also a wide range of products available for different budgets. More importantly, not treating hearing loss may cost you — lost job opportunities, strained relationships, cognitive decline, and reduced quality of life.

At Aanvii Hearing, we offer easy EMI options to make hearing aids affordable. Additionally, a free hearing test and trial cost you nothing. You only invest when you are certain the devices work for you.

Myth 9: It will take forever to get used to them

The truth: Some adjustment period is normal — your brain needs time to relearn sounds it has not heard clearly in years. However, with modern hearing aids and professional fitting, most people adapt within 1 to 4 weeks.
Features like Own Voice Processing make your voice sound natural, eliminating that "plugged up" feeling that bothered users of older devices. And the benefits — hearing your loved ones clearly, make the short adjustment period well worth it.

Myth 10: My friend hated their hearing aids, so I will too

The truth: Hearing loss is unique to each person. Your friend's experience with a specific brand, model, or clinic may have nothing to do with your situation. Technology has also advanced rapidly — a device from five years ago is not the same as what is available today.

Instead of relying on someone else's outdated experience, book a free trial and decide for yourself with your own ears.
